About
SPCA International is a New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing the safety and well-being of animals around the world. Established in 2006, it builds on the legacy of the original SPCA movement, which began in England in 1824 to combat the abuse of carriage horses. Rather than operating its own shelters, SPCA International supports a worldwide network of independent animal welfare groups and runs direct programs for animals in crisis.

What they do
- Shelter Support Fund: launched in 2007, this program provides grants to animal welfare organizations — rescues, rehabilitation centers, and foster programs — in every U.S. state and in more than 60 countries, helping reduce euthanasia rates and improve conditions for animals in shelters
- Patriot Pets: originally launched as Operation Baghdad Pups, this program helps U.S. military personnel by providing veterinary care, clearance, and transport for animals they befriend during overseas deployments, and has helped hundreds of service members reunite with companion animals
- Education initiatives: delivers humane education through printed materials, online resources, school programs, and clinics, reaching thousands of people globally
- Information and referral: offers global animal welfare information and referral resources through its website and by email
History
SPCA International was established in the United States in 2006. Its first flagship program, the Shelter Support Fund, launched the following year, and its military animal rescue work grew out of Operation Baghdad Pups, which began by transporting animals befriended by U.S. troops in Iraq.
