About

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh as the first animal welfare organization in North America. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA works nationwide to rescue, protect, and care for animals in need, guided by the belief expressed in its motto that "We Are Their Voice."

Mission

The ASPCA's work centers on protecting animals from cruelty and improving their welfare. Rather than operating its own national shelter network, the organization collaborates with and offers training and support to hundreds of local agencies, including shelters, rescues, and clinics, while also carrying out its own hands-on rescue, care, and advocacy work.

What they do

  • Investigations and rescue operations for animals in cruelty and disaster situations.
  • Animal care and recovery, including veterinary services offered nationwide.
  • Support for shelters, people, and pets, including grants and scholarships to local agencies.
  • Legislative advocacy for stronger animal protection laws.
  • Targeted programs on puppy industry reform, farm animal protection, and advancing horse welfare.

Scale and impact

The ASPCA states that every year its hands-on work directly impacts hundreds of thousands of animals, with its lasting solutions benefiting millions more. In addition to its national programs, it operates local services in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Asheville (North Carolina), and Oklahoma City.

Financials

According to IRS Form 990 data on ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer (EIN 13-1623829), the ASPCA reported total revenue of 379,347,127 dollars, total expenses of 355,569,022 dollars, and total assets of 640,868,499 dollars for fiscal year 2023. Contributions and grants that year totaled 338,217,130 dollars.

Governance

The ASPCA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization led by President and CEO Matthew Bershadker. It holds a four-star rating from Charity Navigator.
