About
The Climate Reality Project is a climate advocacy nonprofit founded by former US Vice President Al Gore to catalyze a global solution to the climate crisis by making urgent action a necessity across every sector of society. Based in Washington, DC, the organization recruits, trains, and mobilizes people from all walks of life to work for just climate solutions that speed the energy transition worldwide.
Mission
Climate Reality recruits, trains, and mobilizes people to work for just climate solutions. Its shared vision is a swift, systemic, and just transition toward net zero emissions by the middle of this century, with major steps toward that goal by 2030. The organization's values statement commits it to building a more just world where a multitude of voices are heard, holding that an inclusive and equitable approach is critical to solving the global climate crisis.
What they do
- Climate Reality Leadership Corps trainings: recruiting and training climate advocates around the world; trainings began expanding globally in 2007-2010 with events in Australia, Canada, China, India, Mexico, Spain, the UK, and the US.
- Program work focused on reducing emissions, financing a just transition, and global climate leadership.
- Grassroots organizing through regional chapters and the Reality Hub, where members take action on climate campaigns.
- Public campaigns: from 2011 to 2017 its annual 24 Hours of Reality media events focused global attention on climate issues, and in 2015 more than 1 million people signed its Road to Paris petition, delivered by Al Gore at COP 21.
History
The organization traces its start to 2006, when, following the release of the Academy Award-winning film An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore invited 50 aspiring world changers to the barn on his family farm to learn about the climate crisis and how they could make a difference. That first training was the start of The Climate Reality Project. In 2017, Gore returned to screens with the follow-up film An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power. In 2026 the organization marked its 20th anniversary.
Scale and impact
According to the organization, the first 50 trainees have grown over two decades into a global network of 4.5 million people working for change everywhere from town councils to the United Nations. Climate Reality holds a Candid Platinum Transparency seal (2026).
