About

350.org (registered with the IRS as "350 Org", EIN 26-1150699, headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts) is an international climate campaigning organization. Its name refers to 350 parts per million (ppm), the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere considered the safe limit — a threshold the planet has already passed. The organization describes itself as a movement that fights for a fairer future for all and for a world powered by just and accessible renewable energy.

Mission

350.org works to build a global grassroots climate movement. Its strategy rests on two main pillars: resisting fossil fuel projects and their financial enablers, and advocating for renewable energy solutions. The organization trains climate leaders, organizes local campaigns, and builds coalitions across environmental, labor, social justice, and faith groups.

What they do

  • Campaign to stop coal, oil, and gas projects and to keep fossil fuels in the ground
  • Pressure banks, insurers, and other financial institutions to stop financing fossil fuels
  • Advocate for community-led and accessible renewable energy solutions
  • Train and equip grassroots activists — the organization says it provides tools and trainings to more than 10,000 activists every year
  • Support a global network of more than 490 active local groups

History

350.org was established in 2008 by a group of university friends in the United States together with the author Bill McKibben. In 2009 it organized its first major mobilization, a Global Day of Action with participants in 181 countries ahead of the UN COP15 summit in Copenhagen. In 2012 it helped launch the fossil fuel divestment movement, which has since seen over 1,300 institutions commit to divest. In 2014 it helped mobilize the People's Climate March, which brought 400,000 people onto the streets of New York with some 2,000 supporting actions worldwide. After a decade of organizing against the Keystone XL pipeline — rejected by the Obama administration in 2015 — the project's permit was rescinded in 2021. Recent campaigns include pressuring more than 40 banks and 30 insurers to withhold financing from the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

Scale and impact

According to figures published on its website, 350.org supports 490+ active local groups around the world, led or supported 330+ campaigns and events worldwide in the past year, and provides tools and trainings to 10,000+ activists every year. The organization says the movement it is part of has helped move trillions of dollars away from the fossil fuel industry.

Financials

Per IRS filings compiled by ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer, 350 Org reported revenue of $15.96 million and expenses of $22.4 million for the fiscal year ending September 2025, with net assets of $3.6 million. In the fiscal year ending September 2024 it reported revenue of $19.5 million and expenses of $22.8 million. More than 98% of revenue in recent years came from contributions. The organization has held 501(c)(3) status since 2008.
