About
Habitat for Humanity International is a global nonprofit housing organization headquartered in Americus, Georgia, working toward a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Working in all 50 U.S. states and in more than 70 countries, Habitat partners with families to build and improve affordable homes, guided by the conviction that safe housing creates positive ripple effects across health, education, economic growth, and poverty reduction.
Mission
Habitat's vision is "a world where everyone has a decent place to live." The organization notes that one in three people on earth still do not have a safe, affordable home, and it works to close that gap by building innovative housing solutions in partnership with the families who will live in them.
What they do
- Construct affordable homes in partnership with families and volunteers, with future homeowners working alongside builders
- Repair homes, including programs focused on older adults
- Revitalize neighborhoods through community-level work
- Respond to disasters with shelter and housing assistance
- Advocate for policy changes that expand access to decent, affordable housing
History
Habitat for Humanity grew out of Koinonia Farm, a community farm near Americus, Georgia founded by biblical scholar Clarence Jordan. There, Jordan and Habitat's eventual founders, Millard and Linda Fuller, developed the concept of "partnership housing," in which people in need of shelter worked side by side with volunteers to build simple homes at no profit. Homeowner payments and fundraising contributions went into a revolving "Fund for Humanity" that financed more homes. In 1973 the Fullers took the model international with a housing program in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), and in 1976, after returning to the United States, they formally founded Habitat for Humanity International. The organization's visibility was greatly bolstered by the sustained involvement of former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn, and Habitat marks its 50th anniversary in 2026.
Scale and impact
Habitat operates across all 50 U.S. states and in approximately 70 countries worldwide. The organization reports that more than 65 million people around the world are building their futures on their own terms thanks to access to decent housing achieved through its work.
