About

Abode Services (EIN 94-3087060) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Fremont, California, dedicated to ending homelessness in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its guiding conviction is simple: Housing Ends Homelessness. Abode operates one of the region's largest networks of homelessness prevention, rehousing, and supportive housing programs, serving eight Bay Area counties.

Mission

Abode is committed to solving homelessness through housing paired with supportive services, while addressing regional inequities. The organization works to rehouse people in need as quickly as possible and to keep them stably housed.

What they do

Abode operates 158 programs providing housing and/or services across three divisions:

  • Abode Services — homelessness prevention (including Rapid Rehousing Cash Assistance and advocacy), shelter and interim housing, permanent supportive housing, and resident services
  • Abode Housing Development — building affordable housing, with 25 housing sites developed across the Bay Area to date
  • Abode Property Management — managing housing properties and retail spaces, with more than 30 years of experience
  • Bay Area Furniture Bank — furnishing homes for people exiting homelessness

History

Abode was founded in 1988 in the Fremont area, initially serving a small number of families. It has since grown into a family of agencies operating across Alameda, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma counties — a service area spanning more than 60 cities.

Scale and impact

According to the organization's published figures, Abode assisted 18,090 people in its programs in 2025 and has served 54,873 people since 2016. It served 12,044 households last year, including 4,331 seniors, 4,466 children, and 1,052 young adults ages 18-24. Abode partnered with 1,530 landlords last year, reports a 95% housing retention rate in its permanent supportive housing, and states that 41% of permanent supportive housing in the Bay Area is supported by Abode. It provides resident services at 47 housing sites.
