About
CSH (Corporation for Supportive Housing) is a national nonprofit and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) headquartered in New York City. It describes itself as the only national nonprofit focused solely on supportive housing, and it has invested more than $2.2 billion in communities across the country.
Mission
CSH works to advance affordable housing aligned with services as an approach to help people thrive. Its vision is a world in which all people are thriving, with safe, affordable homes and the community supports they need.
What they do
- Lending and investments — as a certified CDFI, CSH provides flexible, low-cost loans and New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) investments to finance supportive and affordable housing development
- Technical assistance and training — helping communities plan, launch, and operate quality supportive housing projects
- Policy and advocacy — developing evidence-based, non-partisan policies that address homelessness and housing instability
History
CSH was founded in 1991 by social entrepreneur Julie Sandorf, inspired by the work of two Franciscan priests in New York City who paired housing with services. Initial funding came from the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. The organization received its IRS tax-exemption ruling in April 1991.
