History

Childhelp traces its origins to 1959, when founders Sara O'Meara and Yvonne Fedderson created International Orphans Inc. on behalf of eleven orphans rescued in Japan after a severe typhoon. The organization built orphanages in Japan and later in Vietnam, and coordinated Operation Babylift adoptions at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. In 1978 it opened the first Childhelp residential treatment village in Beaumont, California; in 1979 National Child Abuse Prevention Month was established by proclamation of President Jimmy Carter; and in 1982 it founded the first national 24/7 toll-free child abuse hotline. The Alice C. Tyler Village opened in Virginia in 1993, and in 1996 Childhelp moved its headquarters and hotline to Scottsdale, Arizona.
