About

The Peregrine Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has worked for more than 50 years to conserve birds of prey worldwide. Founded in 1970 to restore the Peregrine Falcon from the brink of extinction, the organization is headquartered at the World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho, and today works across five continents on behalf of all 561 raptor species. As top predators, birds of prey serve as indicators of ecosystem health while providing essential services like rodent control and disease prevention through carrion removal — and with 56 percent of raptors in decline globally, the organization's science-driven conservation work remains urgent.

Mission

To conserve birds of prey worldwide. The Peregrine Fund's vision is a world where raptor populations and their ecosystems thrive, human communities are enriched by its work, and raptors are valued by all. The organization serves as a global expert on birds of prey and their conservation.

What they do

The Peregrine Fund organizes its work around four pillars:

  • Prevent extinction: working with species at the very brink, sometimes persevering for decades until populations are sustainable again.
  • Protect habitat: focusing on landscapes important to numerous raptor species, resulting in healthier habitat for entire ecosystems.
  • Engage people: nurturing curiosity about birds of prey to build a lifetime of protection, through education, volunteering and community programs.
  • Address threats: using intensive study to understand and counter threats such as poisoning and electrocution.

Its approach, called TPF Complete Conservation, is a holistic model that combines scientific research, habitat and ecosystem management, and deep investment in local communities and conservation leaders. The organization also operates the World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho, a visitor and education center open to the public.

History

The Peregrine Fund was founded in 1970 to restore the Peregrine Falcon, which had been driven to the brink of extinction. The organization repopulated a continent with Peregrine Falcons in just 30 years, and has since applied the lessons of that recovery to raptor conservation around the world.

Scale and impact

Achievements the organization highlights include:

  • Repopulating North America with Peregrine Falcons within 30 years.
  • Doubling the population of the Critically Endangered Ridgway's Hawk in the Dominican Republic.
  • Identifying and addressing the cause of the Asian Vulture Crisis in the mid-2000s.
  • Active conservation programs across five continents, with 2023 field work ranging from the Alaskan tundra to the Dominican Republic.

Financials

Per IRS Form 990 data on ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer (EIN 23-1969973), for the fiscal year ending September 2023 The Peregrine Fund reported total revenue of approximately 34.6 million dollars (including about 33 million dollars in contributions and grants), total expenses of approximately 10.1 million dollars, and total assets of approximately 55.4 million dollars. The organization has been recognized as tax-exempt since 1975.
