About
Teach For America (TFA) is a national education nonprofit and leadership development organization founded in 1990 and headquartered in New York City. It recruits, develops, and supports leaders who begin their careers teaching in schools across the United States, in pursuit of its vision that one day, all children will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. Today TFA describes itself as a network of more than 72,000 leaders who started in the classroom, and it is a member of the AmeriCorps national service network.
Mission
Teach For America finds, develops, and supports extraordinary leaders to transform education and expand opportunity for all children. In 2020 the organization set a ten-year goal: by 2030, twice as many children in the communities where it works will reach key educational milestones indicating they are on a path to economic mobility.
What they do
- Teacher Corps: a two-year paid teaching placement with full salary and benefits, offered in more than 40 locations nationwide.
- Ignite Fellowship: a part-time, paid, 14-week virtual tutoring program that matches fellows with students; a Stanford study cited by TFA highlights Ignite as a pathway into the teaching profession.
- Talent recruitment and matching: recruiting, selecting, and matching tutors, teachers, and principals to schools, and system-leader candidates to districts, charter management organizations, and state agencies.
- Leadership development: programs and strategic partnerships that grow leadership and accelerate the career paths of TFA members.
- Network support: connecting and convening a network of alumni leaders working to change education systems.

Recent milestones reported by TFA include a statewide launch in Missouri (2025) and partnerships with the Aspen Institute to support rural educators.
Scale and impact
According to TFA, its network now includes over 70,000 alumni, corps members, and Ignite fellows working across classrooms, schools, and every sector that affects a young person's education. The organization works in partnership with communities in more than 40 regions across the country.
