About

Operation HOPE, Inc. is an Atlanta-headquartered nonprofit dedicated to financial literacy and inclusive economics, working to make free enterprise and capitalism work for the underserved. Founded by entrepreneur John Hope Bryant on May 5, 1992, immediately following the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, the organization has grown into what it describes as the nation's largest nonprofit dedicated to financial literacy, with more than 100 locations nationwide and partnerships spanning federal agencies and Fortune 500 companies.

Mission

Operation HOPE works to make free enterprise and capitalism work for the underserved, focusing on disrupting poverty among low- and moderate-income individuals nationwide. Its leadership frames this work as advancing "silver rights" — financial equity and opportunity as the next chapter of the civil rights movement. Founder John Hope Bryant sums up the philosophy: "The most dangerous person in the world is one with no hope."

What they do

  • HOPE Inside — financial coaching delivered inside bank branches and community locations, covering credit and money management, homeownership, and small business development
  • HOPE Inside the Workplace — employee financial wellness programs
  • HOPE Inside Disaster — financial crisis support, including the Emergency Financial First Aid Kit, which became an official FEMA document in 2003
  • HOPE Inside for Youth — financial education for young people, building on the Banking on Our Future youth program launched in 1996
  • Signature initiatives including 1MBB (One Million Black Businesses, launched in 2020 with Shopify), Financial Literacy for All (launched 2021 with major corporate partners), Child Savings Accounts, Hispanic initiatives, and an AI Ethics Council

History

Operation HOPE was established on May 5, 1992, by John Hope Bryant immediately following the Rodney King riots of April 29, 1992. It opened its first HOPE Vision Center in an inner-city banking community in 1994, created the HOPE Coalition of America — described as America's economic Red Cross — after 9/11 in 2001, reached 25 HOPE Inside locations by 2013, and opened its 100th location in Baltimore, Maryland in 2017. In December 2024 Bryant announced the AI Literacy Pipeline to Prosperity Project (AILP3) to equip underserved communities with AI literacy and workforce training.

Scale and impact

Operation HOPE reports having served millions of individuals and directed billions in economic activity into disenfranchised communities — converting check-cashing customers into banking customers, renters into homeowners, and small business dreamers into small business owners. The organization says founder John Hope Bryant has directed more than 5 billion dollars in economic activity into underserved communities. Its HOPE Inside model received American Banker magazine's Innovator of the Year award in 2016.

Financials

According to IRS filings compiled by ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer (EIN 95-4378084), Operation Hope Inc reported total revenue of about 37.6 million dollars — including roughly 37.1 million dollars in contributions and grants — and total expenses of about 39.7 million dollars for the fiscal year ending December 2023, with total assets of about 41.7 million dollars.

Governance

Operation HOPE is led by founder, chairman, and CEO John Hope Bryant, supported by a board of directors and a senior leadership team, with financial reports published on its website.
