About
The National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) is a nonprofit based in Columbus, Ohio, that advances digital equity across the United States. NDIA combines grassroots community engagement with technical knowledge, research, and coalition building to advocate on behalf of people working in their communities for digital equity. Its community comprises more than 2,000 affiliates working within communities to advance digital equity, forming the core of digital inclusion programs in the United States.
Mission
NDIA advances digital equity by supporting community programs and equipping policymakers to act. Its vision is that everyone has the opportunity to use technology to live, learn, work, and thrive. NDIA defines digital equity as a condition in which all individuals and communities have the information technology capacity needed for full participation in our society, democracy, and economy, and it maintains widely used definitions of digital inclusion, the digital divide, and the digital inclusion ecosystem.
What they do
NDIA organizes its work around four pillars:
- Support on-the-ground digital inclusion practitioners and advocates, including program support such as the Digital Navigator Model and state support.
- Advocate for local, state, and federal policies that promote digital equity, including work on the Digital Equity Act and broadband affordability.
- Educate policymakers, the media, and potential partners about the need for digital equity and the work of local digital inclusion programs.
- Conduct, support, and promote data-gathering and research, including the Digital Inclusion Impact Aggregator and State of Digital Inclusion in the States.
NDIA also runs signature community events, including Digital Inclusion Week and the Net Inclusion conference, which has been a staple in the digital inclusion community since 2016, bringing hundreds of practitioners, advocates, academics, internet service providers, and policymakers together. Recognition programs include Digital Inclusion Trailblazers and Seven Star Communities.
Scale and impact
NDIA affiliates total more than 2,000 across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and 47 Tribal entities.
