About

Futures Without Violence (FUTURES) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to end violence against women, children, and families and to advance the health, safety, and economic security of communities. Headquartered in the Presidio of San Francisco, with additional offices in Boston and Washington, DC, the organization states that for almost 40 years it has been building healthier, safer and more prosperous communities.

Mission

FUTURES works to prevent violence and advance economic opportunity, organizing its work around five focus areas: preventing violence against women and children; creating positive pathways for men and boys; improving quality health access at every age; expanding economic opportunity; and building the next generation of courageous leaders.

What they do

The organization runs more than 20 initiatives, including:

  • Coaching Boys into Men (CBIM), a violence-prevention program that engages athletic coaches and male athletes
  • The National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence, supporting the health care response to domestic violence
  • Workplaces Respond to Domestic and Sexual Violence, a national resource center for employers
  • Changing Minds, focused on children's exposure to violence and trauma
  • The Survivor Leadership Cohort, supporting survivor-led advocacy
  • The Courage Museum, under construction in the Presidio of San Francisco with completion expected in 2027, designed to inspire young changemakers

Scale and impact

FUTURES states that its founder and president, Esta Soler, championed the federal Violence Against Women Act, and the organization credits the movement it helped lead with a 60 percent reduction in domestic violence against women over three decades, along with securing billions of dollars for life-saving services. The organization directs anyone in danger to the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) and to 911 in emergencies.
