About
The Institute of International Education (IIE) is a New York-based nonprofit founded in 1919 on the belief that international education could build a more secure and prosperous world. One of the largest and longest-standing organizations in its field, IIE designs and administers international education and exchange programs — including flagship U.S. government initiatives such as the Fulbright Program — and provides support for the U.S. Department of State's EducationUSA network, which offers international students accurate information about study at accredited U.S. postsecondary institutions.
Mission
IIE works to foster mutual understanding between people and nations and to develop innovative solutions for peace and prosperity through international education and exchange.
What they do
- Administers the Fulbright Program on behalf of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).
- Administers the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program, and the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) for ECA.
- Manages The Language Flagship and Boren Awards for the U.S. Department of Defense.
- Provides support for ECA's EducationUSA network — a U.S. Department of State network of more than 430 international student advising centers in more than 175 countries and territories that promotes U.S. higher education worldwide.
History
IIE was founded in 1919. The IRS granted the organization tax-exempt status in January 1945, and it has operated for more than a century as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to international student exchange and aid.
Scale and impact
IIE serves more than 29,000 people in 180 countries each year and maintains a global network of 16 offices staffed by more than 600 international education experts. The EducationUSA advising network it supports spans over 430 centers housed in U.S. embassies and consulates, Fulbright commissions, bi-national centers, universities, and nonprofit organizations.
Financials
According to IIE's Form 990 for fiscal year 2025, as reported by ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer, the organization had revenue of $306.4 million, expenses of $301.8 million, total assets of $499.4 million, and net assets of $371.4 million. Contributions accounted for 85.3% of total revenue ($261.4 million), with program services generating 11.0% and investment income 2.6%. Because it spends more than $750,000 in federal grant funds annually, IIE undergoes required federal audits.
Governance
IIE is governed by a Board of Trustees supported by advisory boards and an executive leadership team. Jason Czyz became President and CEO in February 2025, succeeding longtime CEO Dr. Allan E. Goodman.
