Central Texas Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization serving Central Texas. Founded in 1981 as Capital Area Food Bank Inc. and renamed Central Texas Food Bank in 2016, the Austin-based nonprofit provides nutritious food across a 21-county service area, working through a network of nearly 250 nonprofit community partners to reach more than 610,000 food-insecure individuals annually. It is a member of Feeding America and Feeding Texas.

History

The organization was founded in 1981 as Capital Area Food Bank Inc. In its first year of operations in 1982, it recovered and distributed fewer than 330,000 pounds of food. It was named Food Bank of the Year by America's Second Harvest in 1991 and again in 1999. During Hurricane Katrina relief in 2005, it collected more than 1 million pounds of water, diapers, and food in a single day. In 2016 it rebranded as Central Texas Food Bank and moved into a new 135,000-square-foot facility, distributing 38 million pounds of food that year. Distribution grew to just over 45 million pounds in 2017, 52 million pounds in 2019, and 64 million pounds in 2020. The organization marked its 40th anniversary of service in 2022.

The Food Bank serves over 610,000 food-insecure individuals annually across 21 Central Texas counties: Bastrop, Bell, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Coryell, Falls, Fayette, Freestone, Gillespie, Hays, Lampasas, Lee, Limestone, Llano, McLennan, Milam, Mills, San Saba, Travis, and Williamson. It is headquartered at 6500 Metropolis Drive, Austin, TX 78744.
